Internship Job Description

Clinic Duties
Cleaning of indoor cages:
- cleaning and disinfecting cage interiors and exteriors, any “furniture” such as tunnels or den boxes, and the areas around the cage (including floors, counters, and under and above the cage)
- cleaning and disinfecting incubators and kennels
Food preparation:
- making up diets using appropriate ratios of ingredients, appropriately sized pieces of food, appropriate amounts of food, and proper feeding dishes
Feeding of animals:
- learning the correct placement of feeding dishes, proper temperature of food to be fed, and frequency of feedings
Formula preparation and feeding of formula to babies:
- using the correct methods of measuring and preparing liquid formulas for babies
- learning the proper temperature of formula to be fed, frequency of feedings, and amount of formula to be fed
- using appropriate nipple, syringe, and bottle sizes for feeding
- properly maintaining feeding implements and records
Administration of medical treatments:
- following staff instructions for medical treatments
- giving treatments at appropriate times
- maintaining medical records
Observation and monitoring of health and wellbeing:
- observing animals for body temperature changes, stool and urine consistency and appearance, hydration levels, lethargy, feeding and eating responses, and stress levels
- maintaining observation records
- informing staff of conditions noted through observations as necessary
General housekeeping:
- using appropriate cleaning and disinfecting agents
- sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and wiping down work and food storage areas
- disposing of garbage properly
- keeping up with the laundry (by shaking the bedding out, cleaning the lint filter every cycle, and knowing the proper amounts of detergent and correct washer settings to use)
- washing and drying dishes

Administrative Duties
Answering the telephone:
- being polite, courteous, diplomatic, and professional
- taking complete and accurate telephone messages and passing them along to the appropriate person
- giving out accurate and appropriate information
- asking staff when you are unsure of an answer to a question
Admittance procedures:
- following proper protocol for admitting animals
- filling in the admittance form completely
- setting up the animal in an incubator or kennel (by providing bedding, a heat source if necessary, and a covering sheet)
- dealing with the person bringing the animal to us in a professional and diplomatic manner
Record keeping:
- keeping track of animal feedings on feeding sheets and the feeding board
- filling out medication records completely
- keeping track of observations on feeding sheets

Outside Duties
Physical labor:
- lifting and carrying heavy objects (such as hay bales), pushing wheelbarrows, raking, climbing ladders, and painting
- working in all types of weather conditions
Animal care:
- preparing diets
- feeding animals
- cleaning large enclosures
- monitoring health and wellbeing of animals
- providing behavioral enrichment and stimulation for animals
Record keeping:
- maintaining feeding, observation, enrichment, and enclosure cleaning records
Maintenance of equipment:
- regularly cleaning tools and equipment used in outside work
